Earth: A Visitor’s Guide (2014) an abridged – yet extended – excerpt
This book, a far-reaching work of environmental journalism geared toward young adults, places an emphasis on explaining and illustrating the core impacts of climate change on California agriculture. The challenge from a layout and design perspective was an elusive one: to strike a dynamic balance between image and text that not only propels attention, but has a coherent structure as well. Laying out a satisfying, page-turning flow was our goal. The successful result was truly a team effort, accomplished in close collaboration with the writer and the photographer.
|This project of banner creation for Jon Bowermaster’s blog site involved grabbing images from video clips that I found to be strong enough to make a lasting impression while conveying the spirit of his Oceans 8 project. For me, giving a light-filled, natural appearance to the whole project was essential.|
A clean, consistent look and feel across the board – for navigation elements, fonts, spacing and incidental buttons – establishes an atmospheric quality that works as a kind of environment through which the visitor moves.
